Today whilst travelling in the car together the kids and I had a conversation. It was about being a grown up and they asked me what it was like.
What IS being a grown up like?
I immediately thought about bills I have to pay, huge decisions I have to make in life and all the responsibilities that I have on my shoulders.
It felt negative and it felt overwhelming. Then I realised, the answer to the question probably depends on the day that it’s asked! Actually, being a grown up can be pretty good fun too. I can live as I like, do as I choose and also be who I want to be.
The conversation make me wonder. What exactly do the kids see through their eyes about growing up and what do they want from life, even at this early stage. So I asked them! Some of the responses they gave were amusing, some quite thoughtful and some were just lovely.
Here they are below..
I’d like to go to work as a firefighter and earn pennies
I’ll dance to Uptown Funk all the time
I’d like to be able to buy someone flowers
I think I’d like to live on my own
I can’t wait to drive a car
I will have all the mashers in the world and build lots of things
I would love to go to the supermarket on my own and buy things
I’d stay up late and watch tv
I want to make people laugh
I will find two children, or maybe buy them
I will save people
I’d be tall
I’d like to paint my nails lots of different colours
I want to write a book
I want to iron my hair
I’d like to have a big bed
I will have lots of handbags
I would cuddle my Mummy still
I won’t go to school but I might still wear a uniform
I will still like Frozen, but I will go to the cinema with my friends
Betsy will still be my best friend
I’ll have hair like Elsa
I will make you proud of me
Sometimes, these conversations really are what life and parenting are about. These little people make me smile every single day!
