Last weekend I headed over to my spiritual home of Manchester and joined lots of fellow bloggers at the Jet2 Holidays #Jet2Sunchester event at the wonderful Studio conference centre. The details of the event had been kept pretty quiet although I had a feeling we were in for a treat once I arrived and spotted the mixologist van outside. Yay, cocktails-ahoy!
We were welcomed with Prosecco and spent some time networking before being shown into the main area of the event. There were three main holiday destinations on display, Malta, Majorca and Tenerife. I was extremely excited to see complimentary massages, nails and lots of goodies on offer (including fabulous competitions) in order to get us all in the holiday mood!
I also located a flamingo, which made me happy!
I love holidays. Who doesn’t? But when it comes to spending our hard-earned cash, and using our tightly allocated annual leave entitlement it’s so important to choose not only the best deal, but the most suitable location, facilities and also ensure a great service is provided. Once you’re ready to choose your ideal destination though, what do you look for? How should you make such a big decision? What should you add to your itinerary?
Well, I’m going to help you, with the help of ten of my most favourite awesome SOUNDS OF SUMMER. You can even add my suggestions to your Jet 2 Holiday playlist, to get you in the holiday mood!
1. Summer Holiday – Cliff Richard
This classic song from Cliff reminds us all cheerfully to ‘get in the mood’ for a holiday in the sun, away from our worries for a week, or two. This year though, will it be one of Jet2 Holiday’s top destinations that float your boat?
Why not head to the rather fun looking location, Sol Katmandu which is the only place on the island that you can play AND stay just steps away from sandy beaches. Adventure awaits where mythical dreams become legendary holiday memories right here! The fantastic four star resort is bursting with family fun, perfect for a week or two or fun and adventure! Or, perhaps clubbing is more your thing? Then pack your dancing shoes and foam safe outfits and head over to BH Mallorca Island Beach Club, Magaluf’s new party hotel! This place is a stunning resort complex targeted for over eighteens only, the concept is pretty simple, yet unique, everything in one place for party people! The resort also houses a water park with adrenaline filled fun all included in the price. The resort is also just 500 meters from the beach and is located in the heart of Magaluf, making it the perfect position for exploring the area.
Tenerife is an all year round firm family, couples and singles favourite destination. You can be AMAZED by Siam Park, just as I was once I took a closer look! It’s a hotel that also houses one of Europe’s biggest water parks! The theme is a mystical Thai village and you will be transported to a watery works with more than 29 thrilling rides, it’s very own sandy beach, a lazy river and a huge wave pool. Siam Park very cleverly combines smart facilities, great value, convenience and most importantly, lots of fun and memory making!
If you prefer a spot of chilled out luxury then you should definitely check out Hotel Botanico, situated in Puerto de la Cruz, the pioneer tourist destination of the Canaries, famous for its extraordinary climate which is considered to be the best in the world because even the winter temperatures stay around 22 degrees and the weather has no high humidity or mosquito discomforts. The hotel also offers 25,000 squared metres of landscaped tropical gardens, perfect for unwinding. For even more relaxing you can try the wellbeing and beauty temple where the facilities, inspired by the Far East are some of the best in the world! All bookings made with Jet2 all include two days entrance into Loro Parque, one of the world’s best wildlife parks where you can spend time with tigers, orcas, gorillas and lots of parrots!
Malta is an award-winning destination, the perfect choice for those who like to experience history, culture and festivals during their summer holiday. The Maltese Islands (Malta, Gozo and Comino) offer a very diverse selection of accommodation and so there really is, something for everyone, SIX star luxury on the seafront (coming to Malta very soon!), or renting a villa in Gozo for a more rustic feel. Malta’s beautiful calm, turquoise bathing and diving waters would be sure to be a great way to pass those hours away, and with lots of music festivals lined up including Groovefest and Sunscape, Malta really is a great place to spend your time in the sun.
2. Here Comes the Sun – The Beatles
We all hope for sunshine whilst we are away. After all, getting away from the usually grey skies of the UK to catch some rays, feeling the sunshine on our faces and returning with a tan really is a great feeling isn’t it!
Everyone wants to know what the weather will be like during their holiday, so before you book Jet2 have all the essential information you will need on their website, including weather details, extra baggage add ons and also local area guides. All your breaks will be ABTA and ATOL protected too, you can you be assured that your holiday is protected.
3. Sit Down – James
This song reminds me so much of summer and relaxing with friends. Regardless of our schedules, we all need some rest, to re charge our batteries and to sit down once in a while, to do nothing. You can also spend the time travelling on holiday relaxing and reading all about your wonderful destination, today whilst I spent some time chilling out, I flicked through some Jet2 brochures or learn more about the history of the Maltese Archipelago! Spanning 7000 years of rich culture, visitors to the area can walk amongst centuries of history reflected in Maltese architecture and collections. In fact, Malta’s capital, Valletta has been awarded the accolade of European Capital of Culture 2018, so it’s very much worth a visit.
4. Y Viva Espana – Sylvia Vrethammar
‘This year we’re off to sunny Spain…’ Despite the origin of this song being testament to the ubiquity of cheesy style package holidays to Spain in the 1970’s but there is something endearing about those retro holidays to the continent, and this notion of this type of holiday continued to grow in popularity over the years, and perhaps for the British, holidaying in Spain, whether it be in Majorca or Ibiza has become equally as normal as holidaying on UK soil.
Jet2 Holidays have spent years working to create great all-inclusive holiday deals to hotels with great attractions to offer many holiday options to choose from. Carrying the retro package holiday theme but bringing it to suit modern families, with great flying times (late morning and early evening flights), 22kg baggage allowances and easy flying for families meaning that you can take your pushchair free of charge right to the aircraft steps. You can also take a child’s car seat too (as long as both weigh less than 10kg).There are also thousands of free child places up for grabs, which means more pennies for pina coladas!
5. Summer Lovin’ – John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John
Because everyone LOVES a holiday romance and Grease is one of my all time favourite films. Are you single? Perhaps your summer holiday this year will result in meeting someone special and if you’re already taken, then some fun in the sun could certainly add some romance to your relationship. The beautiful grounds of the Hotel Botanico and spa would be perfect to spend some quality time together, treatments, amazing food all with the spectacular view of the Atlantic ocean, perfect and extremely romantic!
6. Everybody’s Free to Wear Sunscreen – Baz Luhrmann
This song was released, after originally being an essay written by Mary Schmich to be published in the Chicago Tribune. Essentially, the song includes various pieces of advice on how to live a happier life avoiding common frustrations! Part of the song states to wear Sunscreen. The message is pretty simple here. Whether you can feel the burn or not, the chances are you are at risk of harmful rays from the sun if you are not protected. The ozone layer is depleting and so our bodies need shielding, also skin cancer rates are on the rise and because sunscreen has been proven to decrease the development of these cancers, then you’d be a fool to put yourself at risk. So slap it on and focus on enjoying your holiday and also being able to enjoy many more summer holidays to come!
7. Club Tropicana – Wham!
Drinks are not always free, but if you head for an all-inclusive package they will be! All inclusive holidays are fantastic value for all the family and the greatest thing in my opinion is that you don’t need to carry cash at all times! Food, drinks and activities are included and with buffet style restaurants (often with children’s menu), a la carte restaurants and often ice cream! There really is no need to worry about your budget! Jet2 also offer an all exclusive all-inclusive plus package at some resorts which sounds great, this means that all international drinks are included, with a 24 hour service too. That’s a holiday without limits!
8. Midnight at the Oasis – Brand New Heavies
The choice reminds me of chilling out on holiday, cocktail in hand. The song is actually about an offer of a desert love affair, with mentions of cacti! If you fancy doing some relaxing on holiday but also some exploring of culture too, beautiful Malta is a stunning place to visit, relax and spend time with loved ones, with walks in the moonlight next to the coast. Malta also provides the world with some fantastic liqueurs such as Lumicetta ta’ Mari and Hanini which are unique and fairly innovative made my local Maltese Artisans, which sound wonderful to sit and try whilst looking out onto beautiful views.
9. Sandstorm – Darude
Now I don’t really want to experience an actual sandstorm whilst on holiday, but I do love this dance track and it very much reminds me of my time working in Ibiza during the summer of 2001. As well as becoming a firm clubbing favourite, it also gained instant mainstream recognition too. Clubbing favourite destination Magaluf certainly goes well with this choice, housing BCM Planet Dance! This year the BH Mallorca will stage some of the best current acts such as David Guetta, Jess Glynne, Rudimental and Tinie Tempah, it’s looking pretty exciting!
10. (I’ve Had) The Time of my Life – Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes
Everyone remembers Johnny pulling Baby up on stage at the end of season revue at Kellermans holiday camp don’t they. It’s a wonderful ending to such a fabulous film, and so this song choice seems fitting for this blog finale!
I sat and pondered what it is that makes a great holiday, what components of an experience make us say or think (or indeed sing!) that we have had the time of our life and I came to the conclusion that the perfect break has nothing to do with spending lots of money. It’s about the setting, cultures, good weather and great company and experiences. Now sadly, there will be no big ‘lift’ or declarations that baby should definitely not be put in the corner, but whatever your plans this summer, fingers crossed they will involve love, laughter and fun!
I hope you’ve enjoyed my song choices and if you’re planning on booking a holiday abroad this year, I would definitely recommend considering Jet2 Holidays. Check out their website for more information, great deals and also useful advice on locations, hotels and of course, weather expectations!
